  • Buildin’ computers… Oh my! — 8 Comments — July 30th, 2006

    Hey there,
Today I thought I would talk about my need for a new computer…

I’ve actually been needing a new computer for quite some time but unfortunately have not had the monetary resources required to do so. However, as some of you may know, my birthday is coming up on the 10th of August so I may come into some money which could cure my money situation. I don’t need anything too flashy. Just a well-rounded PC which can keep up with me in the day-to-day and perhaps support a few good games such as the latest Quake. I’ve been thinking that my best bet would be to build my own computer but I’m a little stumped as to how to go about it.

So I ask you, my readers, where should I start? Do you know of any good Websites which sell good computer parts at cheap prices? I already know of TigerDirect but have thus far not been able to put togeather a good package that will serve my needs and save my wallet. I’m not going to say I’m on a budget because I don’t want to limit my choices just yet. So, can any of you lend a hand and get this computer-building n00b on track?

I could help ya out, I just helped Dan put together a rather nice gaming PC for 1749 CAD.

I’d need to know what your price ceiling is though, among other things. I’m sure I’ll see you on MSN sometime soonish though.

      Thanks for the replies guys…

John: Thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it.

Chris: Thanks, I’ll look into that.

David: I’m not sure when I’ll be on MSN again. Hopefully not too long though. I’m also not sure what my price ceiling is. If I had to guess I’d have to say it’d be around $300 right now though. I’m going to have to buy my new computer in phases– as I get the money.

I would recommend against building in stages, because if you save up all your money for a while then buy at the end, you can take advantage of any price drops that have happened in the mean time while you were saving. When it comes to PC hardware there are price drops all the time, usually whenever a new tech hits the market.

Yeah, that would be my desired method… but unfortunately I don’t have that luxury right now. See, my mother and brother will be the ones paying for the items so it’s like a one-time deal, take it or leave it. So I’m kind of in a pickle I guess…
